The Opportunity....

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to develop and improve mechanical parts and assemblies for airfield lighting products used in demanding airport environments. This role emphasizes part design, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacturability—from early concepts and prototypes through supplier production and in-house assembly.

Working with a multidisciplinary team, you will design and document components such as castings, injection-molded plastic parts, fasteners, seals, and other mechanical elements. You will collaborate with suppliers and internal production teams to ensure designs meet performance, quality, cost, and manufacturing requirements. You will also investigate product issues, identify root causes, and lead design improvements.

You will make an impact by...

  • Design, model, and improve mechanical parts and assemblies for new and existing products.
  • Develop designs for manufacturing and assembly, considering process capability, tolerances, materials, cost, and regulation requirements.
  • Design and document components for manufacturing processes such as casting, machining, and plastic injection molding.
  • Select and integrate standard and custom components, including fasteners, seals, and other mechanical hardware.
  • Create and maintain 3D models,  2D piece-part drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials, and associated documentation.
  • Apply appropriate dimensioning and tolerancing practices, including GD&T where applicable.
  • Work with suppliers to review designs, resolve manufacturing issues, and support part qualification and production readiness.
  • Support in-house production, prototype builds, and troubleshooting.
  • Conduct failure analysis and root cause investigations on mechanical parts and assemblies; recommend and implement corrective design actions.
  • Support verification, validation, and certification builds and testing activities.
  • Maintain project documentation in accordance with quality, product management, and change control procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to improve departmental processes, product quality, and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Support and analyze photometric data as needed, providing guidance to project stakeholders.
  • Travel domestically and internationally, less than 10%.

The talent we want to inspire has...

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical design, part development, and manufacturing support.
  • Proficiency in 3D solid modeling and 2D drawing documentation using SolidWorks or similar programs; SolidWorks PDM experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience designing parts for manufacturing processes such as casting and plastic injection molding.
  • Familiarity with fastener selection, sealing methods, and the design of mechanical interfaces.
  • Understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-up, material selection, and design-for-manufacturing and assembly principles.
  • Experience working with suppliers and supporting prototype builds, production launches, or manufacturing troubleshooting.
  • Experience with mechanical failure analysis and root cause investigation.
  • Understanding of static FEA; SolidWorks Simulation experience preferred. Thermal, fatigue, or other simulation experience is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with engineering, quality, supply chain, and production teams.

A plus but not a must!

  • Photometric analysis or work with lighting and optical systems.
  • Material selection and evaluation for mechanical applications.
  • Integration of electrical components into mechanical designs.
  • SAP/S4 Hanna experience, including material creation and BOM control.
