Failure Analysis Electrical Engineer
Contract Type:  Permanent
Job Location:  USA - Columbus

Smarter, Better, Now.

ADB SAFEGATE’s functional teams are integral to powering innovation and ensuring operational excellence across the organization.

The Opportunity....

The Failure Analysis Electrical Engineer is responsible for conducting system-level failure investigations on airport electrical infrastructure, airfield lighting systems, power distribution products, and associated control systems deployed worldwide. The role supports root cause analysis, corrective actions, and product reliability improvement through engineering analysis, laboratory testing, field investigations, and structured problem-solving methodologies.

This position works closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Service teams, Suppliers, and Customers to resolve complex field issues affecting deployed products and systems. The role requires strong technical expertise in electrical systems, controls, power distribution, system integration, and troubleshooting, along with the ability to investigate failures where the root cause may not be immediately evident or easily reproducible.

You will make an impact by...

  • Failure Analysis & Root Cause Investigation
    • Conduct system-level failure investigations involving electrical hardware, power distribution systems, controls, electromechanical assemblies, and subsystem interactions.
    • Lead structured root cause investigations using engineering analysis, laboratory testing, field data, and problem-solving methodologies such as 8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone Analysis, Pareto Analysis, and Fault Tree Analysis.
    • Take full ownership of 8D reports, focusing on steps D1 (Team Formation), D2 (Problem Description), D3 (Containment Actions), and D4 (Root Cause Analysis).
    • Analyze returned products, components, and assemblies to determine failure mechanisms and contributing factors.
    • Develop and execute test plans aimed at reproducing field conditions and validating suspected failure modes.
    • Perform electrical measurements, inspections, and diagnostic testing using laboratory and field equipment.
  • Field & Customer Support
    • Support field investigations through customer site visits, collection of operating data, environmental assessments, and evaluation of failed equipment.
    • Serve as a technical lead during customer escalations and high-priority field issues.
    • Provide technical expertise during customer discussions regarding failure investigations, containment actions, and corrective actions.
    • Collaborate with service organizations and regional teams to understand site-specific conditions affecting product performance.
  • Cross-Functional Engineering Collaboration
    • Work closely with Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Supplier Quality, Procurement, and Operations teams to identify and implement corrective actions.
    • Support supplier investigations related to failed components and purchased materials.
    • Participate in design reviews and provide feedback to engineering teams based on field performance and failure analysis findings.
    • Drive lessons learned activities to prevent recurrence of failures across product families.
  • Reliability Improvement
    • Monitor claim and field performance data to identify recurring failure trends and emerging reliability concerns.
    • Recommend improvements that enhance product reliability, quality, maintainability, and field performance.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing customer-impacting failures and improving system robustness.
  • Out-of-the-Box Thinking:
    • Approach problems with a curious and analytical mindset, exploring unconventional solutions and identifying hidden causes.
    • Ability to work with limited information/ask the right questions to get required information.
  • Documentation
    • Prepare and communicate technical findings, root causes, corrective actions, and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
    • Generate investigation reports, engineering presentations, and customer-facing technical documentation

The talent we want to inspire has...

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • Strong analytical, research, and self-learning skills, with the ability to quickly develop expertise in unfamiliar technical areas when required to support complex failure investigations and root cause determination.
  • Solid understanding of electrical components, component level-troubleshooting, and their failure modes.
  • Experience using measurement tools, microscopes, and laboratory equipment.
  • Proven ability to lead structured problem-solving activities (8D, Ishikawa, 5 Whys, etc.).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact directly with customers and cross-functional teams.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites as required.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in both office and workshop/lab environments.
  • Hands-on experience in failure analysis, root cause investigation, or quality engineering in a manufacturing or technical environment.
